Fatima Robinson

She is the woman behind the moves for The Gap, Save The Last Dance, Will Smith, Mary J Blige, No Doubt, Busta Rhymes, Nelly, Backstreet Boys, Santana, and the late Aaliyah. Her innovative, fluid, urban style has made her the hottest choreographer in the industry.

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas, Fatima moved to Los Angeles at the age of four with her mother and two younger sisters.  After completing high school early at the age of 16, she dreamed of opening her own hair salon like her mother.  Certified as a Cosmetologist, Fatima worked as a professional hairdresser for a brief period of time, but her love for dance led her out to the clubs, and into dance contests.  “An artist was looking for some dancers, so my friend and I went on stage at the club and battled some other girls and won,” Fatima reminisces. That was the beginning. With some contest victories, and a mind full of dance steps, Fatima quickly became one of the top dancer/choreographers in the music video industry.

Her “big break” came just two years later, when director John Singleton asked her to choreograph the video for Michael Jackson’s “Remember the Time.”  Since then, Fatima has choreographed videos, live performances and tours for most of today’s top artists, and she is also the choreographer behind many of the Gap’s popular dance commercials. Fatima also choreographed and appeared in the 2002 GAP Holiday “Crazy Stripes” commercial and she was also the star of a 30 second commercial and 2 print ads for Coca Cola’s “Nu. Classic. Soul.” Campaign.

Acclaimed by critics and peers, Fatima has received 6 nominations for the MTV Video Music Award for Best Choreography: Mary J Blige “Family Affair” (2002), Aaliyah’s “Try Again” (2000), Will Smith’s “Wild Wild West” (1999), Busta Rhymes’ “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See” (1998), Dr. Dre’s “Been There, Done That” (1997), and Brandy’s “Baby” (1995).  In addition, she is the back-to-back winner of the Music Video Producer’s Association Award (MVPA) for Best Choreography.  In 1998 she received the honor for her work on Busta Rhymes’ “Put Your Hands Where My Eyes Can See,” and in 1997 for her hip-hop tango in Dr. Dre’s “Been There, Done That.”    Fatima was recently nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Choreographer for her work on Radiant Baby, the Off-Broadway musical based on the life of artist Keith Haring at the New York Public Theatre, which was produced and directed by George C. Wolfe.

Named one of Entertainment Weekly’s “100 Most Creative People in Entertainment,” Fatima has recently expanded into directing.  is A graduate of the New York Film Academy, Fatima just shot the debut video for new artist Samantha Jade. Currently, she is preparing to direct a short for Fox SearchLab, and a hip-hop dance documentary.
